Die Beutel werden aus Biomaterialien auf der Basis von Bodenmineralien und Pflanzenölen hergestellt. Das Material zeichnet sich durch hervorragende biologische Abbaubarkeit, hohe Festigkeit und gute Hitzebeständigkeit aus, wobei es ausreichend dehnbar bleibt. Es ist unter Bedingungen wie Kompostierung und Wasserkontakt mit bestimmten Mikroorganismen vollständig abbaubar, während es bei normaler Lagerung und Verwendung sehr stabil bleibt. Andererseits hinterlässt es bei der Zersetzung keine Mikrokunststoffe im Boden.

Im Gegensatz zu den meisten auf dem Markt befindlichen biologisch abbaubaren Kunststoffen ist das verwendete Material PLA-frei. Dies ist ein sehr bedeutender Unterschied, denn Biopolymere (PLA) werden durch biologische Synthese von Mais, Kartoffeln oder Zuckerrohr gewonnen. Der Verbrauch von Lebensmitteln für die Herstellung solcher Pellets ist nicht das einzige Problem. Wissenschaftlern und neueren Studien zufolge braucht Polylactid (PLA), obwohl es von den Herstellern als zu 100 % biologisch abbaubar angepriesen wird, manchmal 45-60 Jahre, um sich im Hinterhofkompost vollständig zu zersetzen.
